Summary, etc. The economic condition of the agricultural labourers and the small and marginal farmers (who are equally poor as the labourers) who form the major segment of the so-called 'weaker' or 'poorer' sections of the society has attracted considerable attention of the policy makers and academicians as well. This has largely emanated from a general belief that the benefits of development are not shared by the rich and poor alike and it has accrued more to the rich than to the latter (if any, at all). The suggested approach that the overall growth of the economy through huge investments mainly in non-agricultural sector will enlarge employment opportunities and help to absorb a section of the agricultural workers, does not seem to hold much hope, judging by past experience.

A proper and fuller understanding of the magnitude of the problem of the weaker sections in its various dimensions is impera tive as a pre-requisite to policy measures. It is in this context that an attempt has been made to present some aspects of rural agri cultural labour in Karnataka, who constitute the largest segment of the weaker sections in the State.

The analysis broadly relates to the decade 1961-1971 and examines inter alia-the growth of agricultural labour and related aspects of its regional distribution and composition; the possible factors affecting the employment of agricultural labour, movement of agricultural wage rates in the context of appraising the changes in the living standards of agricultural labourers and the responsive ness of wage rates for agricultural labour to certain economic factors.
