Summary, etc. | China and India together have more than half the population of the world and a common frontier running into thousands of kilometres. Their relations and their boundary dispute can be disussed from various points of view. To list some of the basic aspects, there is the historical aspect, the geopolitical aspect and the military aspect. The issues involved will be such as Tibetan independence, position of Nepal and Bhutan, Pakistan's position in Kashmir, Pakistan's relations with Soviet
Union, China and India, Sino-Indian relations, Chinese interest in north Burma etc. Since the Sino-Indian boundary became
a live boundary and serious friction at various points on it started in 1959, a great deal of literature on the subject has been published. But the methodology which is followed in India-China Boundary: India's Options is different from earlier studies.
Firstly it does not attempt to see the difficulties that have arisen in Sino-Indian relations as if they are the result of the Sino-Indian
boundary problem. It also does not see the Sino-Indian boundary problem as if it is a result of the difficulties in Sino-Indian
relations.
The study is in three parts. First is a general introduction. The second part analyses the various proposals that have been mooted
from time to time. Tile third part covers some related matters such as demilitarisation of Tibet, Sino-Pak relations, spheres of
influence, Chinese interference in north Burma, Sikkim and Bhutan. This comprehensive study on the Sino-Indian border would enable the policy makers, academics and the general public to understand the issues involved and arrive at a balanced view
of the problem.

|
