| Summary, etc. | As an officer working in the KGB's Third Chief Directorate in East Ger many, the author was uniquely placed to observe the massive counter-espionage. operation mounted by the Soviet Union against West Germany, West Berlin and the American, British and French forces stationed in those territories. More than 1,000 agents worked full-time shadowing Allied moves and persuading or more often blackmailing-people to become agents.<br/><br/>Remarkable successes are claimed in the recruitment of West Germans visiting East Germany. All this is additional to the Soviet Secret Service's normal task of planting informants. among their own troops and among East Germans to inform on their colleagues and fellow citizens, creating the "net work of fear" that helps to control resistance in the Communist empire. |
