| Summary, etc. | The book analyses policy making in India and develops a model of Indian society and its main components in the political, economic, social and cultural domains. Each department or ministry is responsible for policy in the areas allotted to it and hence the set-up of both the State and Central Governments makes for fragmented policy making. Inter policy integration is carried out through a process of consultation either through a Committee of Secretaries or at the Cabinet level.<br/><br/>The author argues for changes in policy making procedures and methods. Only then can the various strands of economic, defence, social and cultural policy be coordinated and integrated. Greater inter ministerial flow of information will be necessary if national policy is to tend towards optimality essential for the nation to successfully meet the challenges of the eighties. |
