Summary, etc. Warfare in a wholly Indian context has never been hitherto studied. Such studies as are, are far too narrow relating to a particular event with references to situation and time and never within the grander scheme of Indian socio-historical development. As such, this book is a natural first, taking us from medieval to the most recent times and omitting almost nothing of significance.
Much discussed within these covers is a problem of weighty consequence to the military - that of modernization. The modem army is a man- machine system where a combination of technological and human capabilities determines the optimum strategic and tactical contigurations created to meet a given crisis. Acquisition of relevant technologies, otherwise modernisation
needs time, money and effort and attendant upon this process is the usual conflict between conservative and progressive forces which occurs within any well knit social group. This problem is most adequately studied as are the many conflicts, both big and little, that have occupied our army since independence. Terrorism has become almost endemic in the troubled state of Punjab while rule by army has not yet been invoked its considerable experience in containing this dangerous menace in the
North East Provinces is carefully disc;ussed and is a good pointer of what will be in the extreme eventuality of army rule.
This is a study whose generality is without precedent. An absolutely essential work to the literate officer and necessary also to the education of the layman who may enlarge himself by the viewpoint of one of India's most respected soliders.
