| Summary, etc. | In this stimulating lecture Professor Srinivas locates the origins of 'modern' dowry in the custom of dakshina which is a part of the ceremony of kanyadan. He argues that the phenomenon of dowry is linked to hypergamous, asymmetrical marriages prevalent among the upper-caste Hindus of the North, and cannot be understood without a reference to the caste system and the emulation of upper caste life-style. Modern' dowry, however, involving large sums of money should be clearly distinguished from its traditional counterpart which was very different in tone and content, as being more specifically a product of forces generated by British rule, such as the monetization of the Indian economy and the organized sector, |
