Summary, etc. Investigating Economics was originally published as a textbook of economics for final school courses in Australia. This edition is an adaptation and revision of the Australian second edition made suitable for the UK economy and students of economics in the UK. The title Investigating Economics was chosen to emphasise that there is much economics that the student can discover by his or her own enquiries.

An important feature of the approach adopted in Investigating Economics is problem solving. This seems particularly appropriate in economics. The economic problem is at the heart of the discipline. In addition, many of the issues economists are confronted with lend them selves to a problem solving approach. By stressing problem solving, the essence of economics is also given the prominence it deserves.

The economic problem is commonly described as the need to make decisions under conditions of scarcity. The problems approach is one of developing methods of 'solving the economic problem in any particular form it may take. The approach aims to:
1 identify the problem;
2 develop the necessary skills to investigate the problem; and
3 recognise that decision-making means conflict between competing ends, and that there is often a need for trade-off between such ends.
