| Summary, etc. | The law of the sea is one of the ancient branches of International Law. It was essential governed by customary inter national law until modern science and technology affected the uses of the sea in a radical way.<br/><br/>After adopting the United Nations. Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982, it has become a matter of current interest, although it may seem unrealistic to comment on the future of the law of the sea before the "Sea-Bed Authority" starts its functions. But the present status of the law of the sea centres around the legal problems facing new capabilities to extract from the oceans their hidden riches of petroleum, minerals, food stuffs, and critical questions of property rights in the sea-bed and its subsoil.<br/><br/>Thus, the law of the sea is of vital importance not only to the international lawyer, academicians or those interested in national defence or external affairs, but also to scientists, ecologists, explorers of the deep, and business entrepreneurs. |
