Summary, etc. Dependence and Interdependence, Volume 2 of Essays in Development Economics, comprises twenty essays, written over two decades, by Bhagwati on international development issues. The volume contains influential writings on the new international economic order and related North-South issues that exhibit Bhagwati's ability to combine historical, political-scientific and rigorous economic-theoretic analysis to great advantage. Several essays address the central question of the choice between import substituting and export-promoting trade strategies. They complement Bhagwati's seminal work in the theory of international economics which laid the foundation of the modern theory of commercial policy. The other essays consider foreign assistance. Issues such as aid-tying and disincentive effects on food production and on domestic savings are analysed using economic theory imaginatively. The volume closes with essays that discuss the many new ideas on international migration which Bhagwati has played a major role in advancing.

The author's current views on the de velopment issues discussed in these essays form an integral part of the work in a series of introductions, notes and postscripts.
