Summary, etc. | Roger Omond was born in East London, South Africa, in 1944. His first political memory is of the 1948 election victory of the <br/>National Party, which implemented apartheid. Educated at Grey High School. Port Elizabeth, and Rhodes University, Grahams- <br/>town, where he graduated in history and politics in 1966, he joined the Daily Dispatch, with Donald Woods as editor, in 1967. <br/>He became successively political correspondent. head of the office in South Africa's first African 'homeland' of Transkei, features <br/>editor, leader writer and night editor. When he left the Dispatch in 1978 he was assistant editor. While in South Africa he wrote for <br/>the New Statesman, Observer and Gemini News Service. He joined the Guardian in 1978 and is now chief sub-editor in the foreign <br/>department. He is married and lives in London. |
