Summary, etc. This book discusses the application of ecological principles, tools and data to the conservation and management of the biosphere. It provides an analysis of the ecological implications of man's use of his environment and an assessment of the strategies needed to conserve and optimize natural resources in the future.

The fundamental ecological variables which influence the use and evaluation of natural re sources are examined, as also are the ways in which both renewable and non-renewable resources are used. In-depth analyses are provided of rates of consumption, and potential and optimum sustainable yields.

The author's aim is to provide a general framework for the rational use of natural resources to

achieve the goals set in the world conservation strategy of the International Union for the

Conservation of Nature and its Resources (IUCN).

The book will provide stimulating reading for all those interested in ecology, environmental science and conservational issues, whether student, professional or interested layman. The author, François Ramade, is currently a Professor of Ecology and Zoology at the Université of Paris-Sud (Orsay) and Director of the laboratory of this department. For many years his main research interest has been the environmental problems arising from the widespread use of chem icals in agriculture. He holds official positions in several French government and non governmental organizations concerned with conservation of natural resources and is a founder member of the French Ecological Society. He is a member of the scientific committee of the interdisciplinary programme of environmental research of the French National Centre of Scien tific Research (CNRS) and is currently both a councillor and bureau member of IUCN

Contents

Foreword Acknowledgements

Introduction

Ecological Concepts related to Nature and Natural Resources Energy and Mineral Resources

The Atmosphere and Climates

The Hydrosphere

Agricultural Ecosystems and Food Production

Forests and Woodlands Natural Rangelands: Savanna, Steppe and other Grasslands The Protection of Threatened Ecosystems: National Parks and other Nature Reserves

Conclusion

Bibliography and References

Glossary

General Index Taxonomic Index
