Summary, etc. Development syndrome in its many facets emerges out in this volume. The paper entitled socio-economic Aspects of Development discusses the capitalist, welfare capitalist, Russian Socialist and the Chinese socialist pattern of development and shows how each of them was inspired by social philosophies which different defined the relationship bet ween the individual and the society in distinctly ways. Against this background the Indian experience in development has been discussed.<br/><br/>Prof. Gore critically examines out lines and discusses such themes as sociologist's role social policy. formulation; Social welfare policy; concept of mobilization; cultural perspective in social work in India; scope of social work practice; Role of social worker in the eradication of poverty: the social context of crime; quest for equality; social reform, law and social change; and development planning.<br/>The paper on developmental planning discusses the Indian developmental experience in the context of Indian historical traditions, the immediate past of the Nationalist movement and of the Gandhian ideology. It also examines the three Critiques of the developmental process-the socialist, the Gandhian and the liberal.<br/>Prof. Gore's perspective, like that of many Indian of the middle class, is influenced by the sentiment that development must be achieved within parameters set by the goals of equality and individual freedom And herein lies the importance of this volume.<br/><br/>This volume contains valuable articles written by prof. Gore mostly between 1976-85. These papers were prepared as memorial lectures or read in seminars or as inaugural talks at national and international meetings. About last of them deal directly with social work seen in the development context. The other half deal with the relationship between social development, social policy and social change.
