Summary, etc. This is the third set of volumes in the well known series entitled Concept's International Series in Geography. This multi-volume set has a wide coverage under the title Perspectives in Urban Geography. The earlier two sets in the series were Perspectives in Agricultural Geography and Perspectives in Geomorphology.
Traditional studies on aspects of Urban Geography had been concentrating on observational records of developments of towns and cities till the subject came to acquire a behavioural approach recently. What resulted was a new matrix of philosophies, methodologies and their ingenious application to what had been researched through the years. The present set of volumes ventures to make a rigorous survey of the literature on Urban Geography after the reorientation as it were.
Despite technological innovations urban renewal programmes and rapid sub urbanization, slums remain a persistent problem of the major cities of the world. The aim of this volume on Slums, Urban Decline and Revitalization is, therefore, to examine their nature and residential obsolescence, the processes that cause occurrence and socio-economic consequences of renewal program mes.
The volume is divided into two Parts. Part one introduces the problem of slums in the Western countries and contains those articles which provide to readers a critical review of the major empirical and theoretical research into sľum housing and residential renewal and neighbourhood revitalization. In this part attention is focussed on the conflicting attitudes towards housing renewal and urban decline in developed countries. Part two presents case studies of slums in Pakistan and India. The intention is that the study will provide an empirical analysis of certain factors and theories in different cultural groups. This part will also provide the reader with an insight into the difficulties involved in resolving the slum problems.
