Summary, etc. This volume is based on the proceedings of the
All-India Seminar on Demographic and Socio-Economic Aspects
of the Child in India held at the International Institute
for Population Studies, Bombay, from February 26 to
February 28, 1979. The seminar was organised as a
part of the national programmes and activities in
recognition of the year 1979 as the International Year
of the Child. A number of eminent scholars and speci
alists, representing the disciplines of Demography,
Economics, Nutrition, Public Health and Social Work,
who were actively engaged on various problems of
Indian children, had participated in and contributed
papers to, the seminar. These papers, after the nece-
ssary revision in the light of the comments and discu-
ssions at the meetings, form the core of this volume.
The volume has two parts: Part I contains the
revised version of the full length papers presen ted at
the seminar; and Part II gives the notes, reviews and
summaries of other papers presented. The papers in
Part I are broadly classified under the three main
sections, namely :
Section A: Demographic and Economic Aspects of the Child;
Section B: Health and Nutritional Status of the Child; and
Section C Social Aspects of the Child.
In all, thirty-nine papers have been included in Part .
It is hoped that this volume will provide not only an
understanding of the conditions of the life, and the
magnitude of the problems of, children in India, buut
also will help to motivate enlightened readers to seek
for solutions to the basic problems afflicting children
in the country today. For re searchers and social
workers in the field, this volume is expected to serve
as a useful reference work. At the same time, it offers
them a wide spectrum of topics which call for further
research.
