Summary, etc. This study, based on the experience of the author in redesign ing the Delhi bus system, attempts to highlight the problems of road transport management and proposes practical solutions for attainment of high efficiency levels. After discussing the theoretical concepts involved, an effort has been made to show how the various modern management theories of systems analy sis, operations research, work enrichment through work redesign, etc., can be translated into a practical scheme for implementation. It identifies the critical factors which lead to economies and diseconomies in bus operation and presents a comprehensive approach to designing optimal operating systems through efficient routes and schedules, improving manpower productivity through proper personnel management and work systems, achieving high fleet availability through rational main tenance systems and various other important considerations relating to management policy. It also discusses many of the problems which the management may have to face while attempt ing to restructure the organization. Detailed treatment of specific areas like computerization, traffic engineering, industrial engi neering, preventive maintenance, etc., has been given in the appendices. A comprehensive glossary of transport terms, a reading list and a list of professional organisations in the field of transport, training and consultancy, have also been furnished at the end of the book.

This book is among the few written in India on transport economics in relation to efficient management practices. Coming from a practising manager with a sound theoretical training, it constitutes a useful study in management science and has direct application for practical managerial problems in industry. It has the sophistication of modern management philosophy and yet its presentation would be within the comprehension of all involved in road transportation. In fact, it could serve as a basic text for students of transport economics and of management studies and a training guide for transport undertakings.
