Summary, etc. This book is one of a projected series of three volumes on the comparative analysis of foreign policy making der the general strip of Wim Wallace The other volumes edited By W Paterson and William Wallace and by Hannes Adomet respectively, will examine the marking of foreign policy in Western Europe and in the socialist states The aim of all these volumes is to combine an informative and empirical analysis of foreign policy making in the region with an awareness of the theoretical approaches to the subject which have proliferated in recent years, such that each illuminates the other and the more useful points of contact between them can readily be seen.<br/><br/>This volume, accordingly, starts with an introductory chapter on theories of foreign policy making, with a particular concern for the adaptations or replacements of theories devised for industrial states which may be necessary for the analysis of developing countries. (We decline to be drawn into sterile controversies over whether this part of the world should be referred to as developing. underdeveloped, or less developed, as the Third World, or whatever) The five following chapters consider the salient features of foreign policy making in Southeast Asia, the Middle East. Sub-Saharan Africa, the Commonwealth Caribbean, and Latin America. The volume thus represents a very wide spectrum both of domestic and of external environments. The authors, all of whom are specialists in (and three of whom are natives of their particular areas. have been asked to consider domestic, regional and global influences on policy, and the decision-making process, but have been left free to order this material as they saw best, within the common concerns of the book as a whole. They have not taken for granted any previous knowledge of the region, and each chapter is provided with a bibliographical appendix, to enable interested readers to pursue the subject further. The concluding chapter continues the comparative theme by drawing together threads from the regional chapters, and examining the levels at which, and techniques through which, the comparative analysis of third world.
