Summary, etc. | This is the first of a two-volume collection of documents, covering the period from' Independence until 1972. It contains the most important and comprehensive of the many documents on the subject, drawing upon governmental and non-governmental publica-
tions, proceedings in Parliament, broadcasts to the nation, press reports, etc. Each of the 199 documents in this volume is refaced by an introduction by the Editor, stating briefly the context to which it relates. The section on Foreign Policy deals
with aspects such as non-alignment, racial equality, Panchsheel and India's policy with regard to people of Indian origin abroad. The Editor's emphasis is very much on 'Relations', however, or the actual implementation of foreign policy as evidenced in India's
bilateral and multilateral relations with other countries. This volume deals with her more immediate neighbours, namely Pakistan (particularly over the Kashmir issue), Bangladesh, and China, countries which are of paramount importance to India's foreign
relations for obvious reasons. DR APPADORAI is Honorary Professor at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His writings on political science include Indian Political Thinking in the Twentieth Century, The Substance
of Politics, Documents on Political Thought in Modern India (2 volumes), and Domestic Roots of India's Foreign Policy 1947-1972. Volume 2 of the present work is currently in press.
|
