Summary, etc. | This book is about the international gap in wealth between rich and poor nations and the domestic gap in wealth between rich and poor people. It is a substantially revised version of its three predecessors, The Gap Between Rich and Poor (1984) and the first two editions (1993 and 1998) of the present book.<br/>As the book is organized, any one part could be assigned to students as a self-contained unit. The order in which the parts are present ed here, however, does create a logical path that students can easily fol low. Parts 1 and 2 provide the basic facts of the Part 3 deals with the dynamics question: Is the gap widening or narrowing? Part 4 presents culture-based explanations for the gap. Part 5 covers dependency and world-system theories, with much empirical evidence and case study data supporting both sides of the debate. Part 6 covers the role of the state in stimulating or inhibiting growth and inequality. And in Part 7, we offer some conclusions and directions for future research. |
