The cause is not necessarily religion; tension mounts between different communities because of political, social, economic, cultural or even linguistic factors. A small and insignificant incident is then sufficient to spark off a communal riot which is, not infrequently, accompanied by outrageous crimes such as arson and the brutal killing of innocent people.<br/><br/>This book presents an analysis of communal riots in post-Independence India. The origin and nature of communal riots are discussed first from the theoretical and academic points of view. This discussion is supplemented with first hand reports on certain major riots. Also included in the book are general papers on the role of the police and the press during communal riots, and the Minorities Commission's definition of communal organisations |
