520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Service Sector in Indian Economy' highlights the growing importance and significant role assigned to social aspects of development in economic planning in the Indian context, and in developing countries in general. The UNDP's Human Development Report 2004, South Asia HDR 2004, and India-National HDR 2001 speak volumes of the present position, high or low, of various countries, component-wise, and for all components together. Taking the thread from these volumes, scholars have developed review articles on specific themes, broadly grouped as social aspects of development, and included in this publication. These present a review of experiences of recent periods at national, state and district levels, and in the context of specific programmes. The articles also deal with directions for the future.

The themes covered are: overview of challenges and opportunities in Emerging India, education, health, and a few other social service sub-sectors. A few of these are service sector in its totality, improving service quality and insurance. Education and health sub-sectors are covered in considerable depth through an examination of a variety of topics under each theme.

The publication will be of considerable reference value to all those involved or interested in a wide range of social aspects involving people's participation extensively at the grass roots level. Policy makers, administrators, researchers and academics will find this an invaluable publication for initiating action, and for pursuing further micro level research studies.
