Summary, etc. THE study described in this book was undertaken by the Department of Social Science of the University of Liverpool from 1953-1956. It is the work of a team under the leadership of W. H. Scott, and with J. A. Banks, A. H. Halsey and T. Lupton as its other senior members. The study was planned and the report written by them, and all members of the team took part in the fieldwork and the analysis of data. Professor T. S. Simey, the Head of the Department and the General Editor of the Social Research Series, participated in the planning of the project and the editing of the final draft.<br/><br/>Dr. Scott prepared the Introduction, Chapter 2, Conclusion and Appendix A, revised the work as a whole, and supervised the field work on which Chapter 2 is based. Mr. Banks joined the team in 1954; he assisted with final drafting of Chapter 4 and with the editing of this report, supervised the study of melters, and prepared Chapter 5. Dr. Halsey supervised the collection of the information presented in Chapters 1 and 4, and wrote the drafts of these Chapters after leaving for the University of Birmingham in 1954. Mr. Lupton was responsible for the fieldwork described in Chapter 3, and com piled the first draft of this chapter after his departure for the University of Manchester in 1954.<br/><br/>In addition to their participation in the several stages of the fieldwork, the research workers had special responsibilities for various aspects of the work. I. C. McGivering assisted Dr. Scott in the study of management; C. J. Parsons worked with Mr. Lupton in collecting information concerning trade unions; J. M. Kirkby helped Dr. Halsey to gather the data presented in Chapter I, and to arrange the interviews with a sample of employees; Olive Banks was responsible for the study of melters' wives referred to in Chapter 5; and Eileen Knowles undertook the calculations of earnings described by her in Appendix C. Elizabeth Gittus acted as consultant statistician throughout the study, and compiled the statistical notes in Appendix B. J. M. Kirkby undertook most of the work required in compiling the Index.
