| Summary, etc. | This volume completes the study of constitutional development in India from its beginnings in the days of the East India Company to the restoration of normalcy after the termination of double Emergency-external and internal-in 1977. The theme is the emergence of India as a free nation and the consolidation of a democratic system of government. The verdict of the people against the subversion of freedom in 1975-76 by the Congress was a forceful testimony to the fact that political democracy had taken roots in the Indian way of life. The end of the colonial system in the sub-continent changed the political and economic complexion of the post-war world. The period 1919-77, covered in the following pages, marks the resurgence of this ancient land and brings it face-to-face with the challenges of the atomic age. |
