Summary, etc. | The object of this book is to introduce the serious student of Indian economics to a small core of essential reading in his subject and also to assist the general study of economics. It isolates some important problem areas (such as sectoral planning, the 'green revolution', behaviour of inter-sectoral terms of trade and marketed surpluses) and offers the reader a careful and stimulating study of each area. The Editor hopes thereby to promote a more systematic approach to development problems in the agricultural sector. Much of this im portant material has so far had only a very limited circulation, particularly outside India.

Although the book can be read with advantage by the general reader, it is designed especially for research workers and for students. Suitable case-study material in this field is hard to come by and this book should redress the balance. It can be used at both M.A. and second and third years of first degree level.

Mr Chaudhuri, who is Lecturer in Economics at the University of Sussex, has special interest in economic development in South and South-East Asia, and has been teaching in this field for a number of years, both at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. He has done field-work in India and is currently doing research on the role of foreign aid in the Indian economy. |
