Summary, etc. Despite a continuing strong tradition of research in various fields of human genetics in India, it is unfortunate that in none of the Indian Universities/Institutes a full fledged course is being offered in this important discipline. There is a great interest in human genetics in the country and an ever increasing number of scientists continue to persue research in this field.
In the absence of organised teaching in the country, the Indian Society of Human Genetics (ISHG) took initiative to fill in this lacuna, though very partially, by offering intensive training programmes.
The society, in collaboration with the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta, conducted its first workshop on Statistical Methods in Human Population Genetics. The Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi, gave a muni ficent grant of Rs. 5000/- towards the expenses. The ISHG provided the initiative and expertise and the ISI provided the venue, free accomodation to the participants and other technical facilities. The workshop was held at ISI, Calcutta from 6 October through 4 November 1980.
The selected 42 participants came from 19 different places in the country and represented 23 Universities/Institutions. The participants had degrees in Anthropology, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Botany, Statistics and Zoology.
