Summary, etc. This is the second volume of a series devoted by the International Labour Office to the subject of new forms of work organisation. Thus in addition to a first volume containing monographs concerning Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, the Office is now publishing national monographs concerning the German Democratic Republic, India, Italy and the USSR, together with a paper on achievements and possibilities with regard to the evaluation of the economic costs and benefits of new forms of work organisation.

As already indicated in the Preface to the first volume, some of the national monographs have been prepared by independent research workers, and others by specialists attached to official bodies. Although a common outline was developed before the monographs were written, they are very different indeed not only in their arrangement but in their treatment of the subject of the organisation of work and its relationship to national political, social and economic institutions. The views put forward may be challenged, from different points of view, in government, business, union or academic circles. Without necessarily endorsing the opinions expressed in the monographs, the Office has deemed it worth while to publish these papers in order to show how different research workers and specialists attached to official bodies see the subject in different countries.
