Summary, etc. The SOUTH ASIAN SEMINAR ON CHILD SERVITUDE was held from June 30 to July 4, 1989 at the Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, New Delhi, India. It was attended by some 60 delegates from five countries of SOUTH ASIA-Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India. The mojority of the delegates were representatives of social action groups, who were trying to relate themselves creatively with the question of Child Labour at the local level. In addition, ex-jurists, journalists, scholars, lawyers, and representatives of some human rights organisations also attended the Seminar. Among the regional and internatinal organisations invited to share their experiences and concerns, only INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANISATION (ILO) came for a Session. The SAARC secretariat wrote to us regretting their inability to participate due to practical problems. The letter from SAARC Secretariat is being reproduced elsewhere in this Report to share their sentiments of solidarity with the organisers of this Seminar - The Bandhua Mukti Morcha (Bonded Labour Liberation Front of India).

The most valuable contribution to the Seminar came from the TESTIMONY of Children in Servitude, who came from different parts of India, and from Pakistan too. Their voices were heard for the first time in a Seminar of regional level. Their presence made all the difference. It brought in a kind of seriousness in dealing with the issue of Child Servitude, and deepened our commitment to the cause of these children. Of course, it was not all work and no play for them. Their inherent creativity was expressed through art and culture, which they produced instantly during seperate sessions meant for them in the Seminar. The profiles of children produced in this report, along with parts of their Testimony reflects the soul of the Seminar.
