Summary, etc. | India has become self-sufficient in food. This commendable feat has been possible because of a well-planned strategy for research, education and development of agriculture. However, new problems and targets continue to face us. For example, we have yet to meet our requirements for edible oils and pulses, milk and meat. The potential of agriculture has yet to be exploited further to combat the problem of alleviating rural poverty. This challenge is before the Nation, and all those connected with the agriculture and rural development in the country.

In his speeches during 1985, Sardar Buta Singh, as the Union Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, touched upon various such problems. He also gave directions to those connected with the agriculture and rural develop ment to solve these problems. His thoughts and directions related to agricultural research and education, extension, development, agro-based industry, co-operatives and various agencies directly or indirectly connected with the task of agricultural production and rural reconstruction. If we translate these thoughts into practice, it should be possible for us to transform rural poverty into prosperity and lead the country into the 21st century. |
