In 1970 he was appointed to the Permanent Committee for the Oliver Wendell Holmes Devise by the president of the United States. Winfred A. Harbison is Professor Emeritus of History at Wayne State University, where he has also served as vice-president for Academic Administration. Professor Harbison has been Fulbright Professor at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He is the author of numerous pieces on Abraham Lincoln.<br/><br/>Herman Belz is Professor of constitutional history at the University of Maryland. He did his undergraduate work at Princeton University and received his Ph. D. from the University of Washington. His previous publications include Reconstructing the Union: Theory and Policy during the Civil War: A New Birth of Freedom: The Republican Party and Freedmen's Rights; and, with Norton, Emancipation and Equal Rights Politics and Constitutionalism in the Civil War Era.
