Summary, etc. Seventies had witnessed a period in which greater attention was paid to new ideas and experiments that transformed the concept, pace and pattern of development. With the increase in activity at various levels to translate ideas into action, there was a phenominal growth in literature ranging from basic concepts to complex development equations.

Here a modest attempt has been made to cover the literature on some centrally-sponsored special programmes concerning rural development, as they constituted the focus of on-going researches. The publication lists over 1,100 references, covering published/unpublished books, journals and signed newspaper articles, on 22 special programmes grouped under four heads viz., area-specific programmes, target-group-specific programmes and programmes for employment generation and social welfare. Such of those research publications and reports as could not be grouped strictly under the above categories but have a definite bearing on one or the other aspects of these programmes have been given in the last section.

A short write-up, to merely introduce the individual programmes, precedes the references pertaining to each section in the main part of the bibliography. Under each individual programme, generalised aspects are first arranged alphabetically under the author/ title, as the case may be. This is followed by literature pertaining to each state arranged again alphabetically. The need for a separate subject index is perhaps obviated to some extent by this arrangement.

For the articles that appeared in periodicals with two authors, the entry has been rendered under both the authors, followed by title of the article, name of the periodical, volume and issue number in parenthesis, pagination and month and year of the publication. For books, the entry element is invariably the first author followed by title, imprint and collation. As regards the books with more than one author, the names of joint authors are indicated in the 'Author Statement' following the title.

Concise annotations to selected entries tend to summarise the important points or the main trends of the arguments presented in the document and no attempt has been made to evaluate critically the thought content of any publication. Inadequacies and omissions in presenting the literature solely the responsibility of the compilers. are

An author index has been given at the end which provides cross-referen ces to the entries in the bibliography.
