Summary, etc. "The Economics of Socialism" is a concise exposition of theoreti cal and practical elements of the operation of the planned economies in the USSR, Eastern Europe and other Socialist countries. Special attention is given to economic reforms and recent developments. Plan ning, profit, production and growth, investment, consumption, trade unions and land constitute the first half of the book, followed by prices, money and banking, fiscal policy and control and domestic trade. The concluding chapters deal with international economic relations and the comparative evaluation of Socialism.

Special features of this book make it suitable for both beginning and advanced readers in the field of Socialist economics-a gloss ary of Socialist economic terms, extensive references at the end of each chapter (including Socialist sources available in English) and a guide to relevant periodical literature (both Socialist and English).

The fourth edition has been completely reset. A chapter has been added on trade unions and industrial disputes, tables and charts have been updated or otherwise improved and the text has been thoroughly revised. In addition to the traditional controversial questions exemplified by the role of planning and the market, profit, rates of economic growth, pricing and incentives, this edition also embodies such topical issues as free trade unionism, strikes, fluctuations, consumer wel fare in relation to Communist power, passenger cars, indebtedness to capitalist countries and comparative standards of living
