Summary, etc. The nationalisation of commercial banks on July 19, 1969 was introduced to convert the banking of classes into the banking of masses and to bring rapid transformation of purely profit-oriented, pri vate-owned and urban biased banking sector into a development-oriented and social justice-based public sector industry.<br/>Banking in pre-nationalisation era was true to the dictum: "Where enterprise leads, finance follows As such it caused wide regional, sectoral and State-wise disparities. The nationalisation objective was to identify the banks more closely with the nation's socio-economic goal.<br/>This book provides latest information about the growth of Public Sector Banks since nationalisa tion. Using inter-regional and inter-state banking data, various aspects of public sector banking growth in India have been examined by the learn ed author, viz the pattern of expansion of bran ches, mobilisation of deposits, credit-disbursement. credit-deposit ratio and the disbursement of credit among the priority sector, with a separate chapter on agriculture credit.
