Summary, etc. | Within four months of its establishment in Bangalore, the Institute for Social and Economic Change, organized a seminar on the economic and social development of Karnataka (then called Mysore), the principal issues arising therefrom, and the role that social science research could play in dealing with them. The seminar, which lasted three days, was a dialogue between social scientists interested in the economic and social development of Karnataka, and administrators actually involved in this development; and both categories of participants contributed written papers on topics of their choice relevant to Karnataka's development. This volume is the result of the deliberations of the seminar.

The volume is divided into seven sections. The first contains a background note on the theme of the seminar jointly prepared by H. K. Mazumdar and S. Seshaiah of the Institute, the former being an economist and the latter, a sociologist.
The second section deals with agriculture and allied activities in the state and contains seven papers, four by administrators and three by social scientists.
The third section deals with the distribution of the benefits of rural development programmes and finds support for the thesis that small farmers as a class have not had an equitable share in the process.
The fourth section deals with education and development. The fifth section deals with social justice and development. The sixth section deals with planing and development. The seventh section deals with research frontiers of development. |
