Summary, etc. Commercial banking, particularly its nationalised sector, has gained specta cular prominence in the present day economy of India due to many structural changes that have taken place in recent years. The role of banking in the fields of capital formation, encouragement of entrepreneurship and generation of employment opportunities can hardly be over-emphasised.<br/>Social control over banks and the nationalisation of 14 major scheduled commercial banks in India have increased the dimensions of the role of commercial banking in this country. The changes in the field of their management and organisation, necessary for the proper discharge of their social obligation, have been studied. A scheme of management and organisation, expeditious in action, economical in managerial expenses and effective for coordination, has been made out for the operation of these banks.<br/>The quantitative and qualitative perfor mance in discharging various social obligations in this respect has also been assessed and discussed. The problems and difficulties in the way of the successful discharge main obligations, have been analysed in of social depth objectively, and suitable sugges tions have been offered to solve them quickly, easily and effectively. entire study directed The towards recommending the best use that nationa lised commercial banking can be put to in the wider interest of the national economy.
