Summary, etc. This is the beginning of a series of volumes on Indian Islam, a subject of great significance in
the Muslim world.
Islam conjures up in the contemporary mind the most diverse images: a conservative,
all-embracing medieval system of life, a powerful anti-colonial movement, a progressive socio-
political revolutionary force and so on. A varied history over the past centuries spread out over
most diverse and distant regions has given Islam in India many faces. In free India within the
framework of a secular, democratic state, further developments of great significance
are taking place. Islam in India thus presents a singularly important element in the mosaic
of Muslim culture and religion as a whole.
This series (a project of Vidyajyoti Institute of Religious Studies, Delhi, in collaboration
with renowned scholars from all over the country) aims at a scholarly presentation of
distinctive religio-cultural aspects of Indo-Muslim life and thought,
past and present. It hopes to mirror the various views and experiences of Muslims from the
different regions of India in the hope of contributing to a greater awareness and understanding, prerequisites for harmonious
living.
Among the issues discussed in the present volume are: the past and present meeting of Islam and
Hinduism, medieval Indian Sufism
