Summary, etc. The recent crises in international monetary arrange ments have drawn attention to the urgent need for reforms. This book emphasizes the importance of proceeding with such reforms in the context of the other main areas of international economic co operation. These include the various policies adopted by different countries to achieve full employment and a strong balance of payments; the promotion of world trade by reductions in tariffs and other obstacles to trade, both generally and among groups of countries; and policy towards capital flows and economic aid.

Dr. Perkins emphasizes the various ways in which policy in each of these areas interacts with the others and the effects on the less developed countries. His viewpoint is that of the world economy as a whole and will appeal equally to readers in differently situated countries. His book is intended for courses in international economics, but will present no difficulties to the businessman on whom these problems now daily impinge. Detailed treatments already exist of some of the topics dealt with by Dr. Perkins, but there appears to be no similar work considering together all the urgent, inter-related aspects of policy for world trade and emphasizing their effects on each other.

Dr. Perkins has been a Simon Fellow of the University of Manchester; Research Associate in the Department of Applied Economics, University of Cambridge; Research Fellow, Australian National University and is now Reader in Economics in the University of Melbourne. He has written four previous books.
