Summary, etc. Industrialisation plays a critical role in the process of economic development, and is a funda mental policy objective in most less developed countries. This textbook analyses, at both aggregate and micro-economic levels, the industrial conditions prevailing in Third World coun tries and relates this to the process of economic growth and structural transformation.

Drawing upon both industrial and development economics, the authors offer a more com prehensive and integrated tre atment of the different levels of industrial analysis in less developed countries than has hitherto been available. Fur thermore, the authors have compiled a wealth of compara tive data on industrial struc ture, business concentration and behaviour, and industrial policies in a cross section of countries in Africa, Asia, the Far East and Latin America.

In combining the analytical approaches of development and industrial economics, and by providing a comprehensive survey of recent literature, this textbook will be essential reading on both industrial and development economics cour ses in developed and deve loping countries. It is written for students who have previ ously studied economics at first-year university level or its equivalent but it does not assume any prior knowledge of development or industrial economics. It will also be of considerable interest to other readers concerned with the problems and policies of Third World industrialisation and development.
