This is a study of the evolutionary process of the structure of the Sinhalese Buddhist system which is the religion of the majority in Sri Lanka. It encompasses a historical analysis of the organisation of the Buddhist religion namely, the Sangha and the manifold functions and role of the Buddhist clergy, i.e., Bhikkhus, in urban and rural settings. The study is an attempt to analyses the interplay of the religious and political systems as they have emerged in the island in the different phases of its history.
