India's urbanization 1901-2001 - 2nd ed. - New Delhi Tata Mc Graw-Hill 1978 - 567 p.
This book is primarily concerned with the demographic aspects of urbanization in India. Most of its statistical analysis is based on census data. Wherever possible, the historical perspective has been maintained by a study of trends in urbanization from 1901 onwards. The emphasis, however, is on the two decades, 1951-61 and 1961-71.
The material in this book is organized in seven parts. Part I gives an overview of the process of urbanization in India and is concerned with some emerging issues in urbanization viewed from the demographic, economic, sociological and political angles.
Part II is concerned with concepts, definitions and sources of data. Chapter 2 examines the definition of "urban" in the Indian censuses from 1901 to 1971. Chapter 3 discusses the basic data needed for the study of urbanization on the basis of the Indian census. Part III is concerned with urban growth during the twentieth century, that is to say, it analyses the past trends in urban growth for the period 1901-71 and gives projections of urban population from 1981 to 2001. Chapter 4 is an overall picture of six decades of urbanization for the period 1901-61.
Chapter 5 analyses in detail the decade 1951-61 only, while Chapter 8 gives the analysis for the 1961-71 decade. Chapter 6 draws attention to the stagnation of small towns whereas Chapter 7 discusses urban growth in the context of accelerating popula tion growth rates and surplus labour within the urban sector. Chapter 9 sums up the projections of the urban population for the period 1981-2001. Chapter 10 discusses the implications of population projections for rural transformation in the wider framework of the Asian countries. Part IV contains two chapters on internal migration. Chapter 11 analyses the migration streams within India based on the 1961 Census.
Chapter 12 discusses migration and linguistic dispersal in India.
Part V specifically deals with urban Delhi as a case study. Chapter 13 reports the findings of our study on land prices and land speculation in urban Delhi for the period 1947-67. Chapter 14 is concerned with house rents in selected luxury colonies in Delhi and with the emergence of the new rich in a fringe village where agricultural land was sold for residential use. Chapter 15 gives the high lights of a survey of house rents in Delhi for the period 1958-73 based on a field survey which was conducted by the Institute of Economic Growth.
