Nowhere People
"Tharakan, Siby.(ed.)"
Nowhere People - Bangalore Books for Change 2002 - 156p.
The World Bank estimates that between 99 to 100 million people around the world have been displaced (forcibly evicted) over the past decade as a result of large-scale development initiatives such as dam construction, urban development and transportation programmes. India is in the forefront of countries which produce large numbers of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who lack the basic amenities of life such as food, shelter, sanitation and clothing. After its independence, India has constructed about 3300 large dams. Most of these projects have forcefully evicted large numbers of people, including vulnerable populations from their natural habitation. About 50% of such displaced people are tribals.
Apart from development induced displacement, The Nowhere People examines the various aspects of conflict induced displacement such as terrorist activities and insurgencies also, as both are responsible for the large-scale displacement of people from their own land, and their expectations. To seek and to save the displaced' is a sign of true humanity. This is the challenge this book poses.
