Psychoanalysis in colonial India

"Hartnack,Christiane"

Psychoanalysis in colonial India - New Delhi Oxford University Press 2001 - 243p.

This work looks at the early development of psychoanalysis in colonial India, both from the point of view British analysts working in India, as well as that of Indian thinkers. It shows how Freudian concepts were challenged by Indian thinkers in applying them to very different social, familial and cultural contexts. The author also studies Freud's correspondences to reveal his attitude towards 'the Other', which mirrored European hegemonic tendencies.
