The common theme of all the papers included in this volume is economic theory, its structure, its use, and its misuse. The Gibbs Memorial Lecture on "Mathematics in Economics" was read be fore the 1953 Annual Meeting of the American Mathematical Society at a time when high school calculus was viewed by most economists as advanced mathematics and matrix algebra was still relegated to the pages of the journal called Econometrica.
