When Iraq marched its troops into Kuwait on 2 August 1990 it opened a new chapter in regional and international relations. The blatant violation of the UN Charter and flouting of international norms isolated Iraq in international community. While the Security Council passes successive resolutions with the aim of forcing Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait and to punish it for its actions, Iraq sought to link its occupation of Kuwait with other problems in West Asia. That linkage was rejected.
Iraqi action coincided with the new detente. Thus, while the great powers showed a new solidarity, Arab-Islamic world was sharply divided on the question. This enabled the coalition to use coercive means over and above the provisions of the Security Council Resolutions, not only to force Iraq out of Kuwait but also to destroy its military capability.
The Gulf Crisis has opened a new chapter in world history. It will also have serious long term repercussions on India's economic and foreign policies. The book is a modest effort in understanding these developments.
