Origin and growth of towns - New Delhi Concept 1990 - 268 p.
The volume attempts to identify various morphological characteristics of the towns of North Bihar to show how these have evolved through time. Application of the concept of developmental biology is made use of to analyses the developmental
pattern and morphogenesis of towns. The impact of various physical and cultural influences upon the evolution and
morphology of towns has been examined. The economic base of the region has been analysed variously at block, sub-division
and district levels. A detailed analysis of the functional structure of 11 sample towns has been carried out in the light of their
geographical setting, spatial shape, population growth and occupational and functional structures. An indepth study has
been made of the residential areas and morphology and evolution of commercial areas analysed. An account of the
morphology of other functional areas, viz., industrial, administrative, educational, medical and recreational, has been given,
besides an evaluation of the problems associated with various morphological areas. Being an inter-disciplinary study, the book
should be of interest to geographers, sociologists, regional and urban planners,
etc.
