and transport to cope with the increasing demand of human population. Through the present work based on the study of five sample cities of West Bengal viz. Howrah, Durgapur, Burdwan, Hooghly-Chinsurah and Chandan Nagar. Dr. Arun Kumar Singh attempts to highlight the extent of the problem. The study has two parts: the first one deals with the circumstances causing' variation in the experience of urbanisation, the second part tries to interrelate urban development with infrastructural development of the municipal government. The role of municipal governments has been examined particularly to assess sensitivity of the city
