The volume presents the findings of a research project undertaken by the author for International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canada and National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi, Research undertaken for this volume also represents a continuation of the author's interest in the development of the Coal Industry in India, which was the subject for his D. Phil, thesis at Oxford.
The study undertakes a critical evaluation of technological developments in the coal industry since nationalisation. The development in different form of coal mining underground and open-cast are analysed in depth. The study brings brings out the relevance of recent advances in long wall and open-cast Industry. It also highlights the problems in efficient utilisation of new technology in the Indian context.
