After Independence, urbanization in India is rapidly increasing and bringing in its wake vast social, economic and cultural imbalance between the rural areas and urban areas supported by them. The problem of spatial pattern has, therefore, assumed significance and Indian Geographers have recently attempted to study the spatial pattern by applying the Central place theory as in the process of urbanization, a hierarchy of Central places is emerging.
In the present book, Dr. Vashistha Narayan Singh presents his pains taking research based on collection of data from diverse sources and intensive field work. The spatial pattern, growth of urban centres, functional hierarchy and potentially of future growth of North Bihar region form the universe of his insightful investigation. The aspects comprehensively examined and answered are (1) What has been the extent of regional urbanization in the past ? (2) What is the recent trend of growth and the potentiality of urban development in the study area? (3) To what extent are the functional and other characteristics of exis ting centres related to their growth and spatial distribution ? (4) Can the restraints to urban development in the region be iden tified and removed ? (5) Does the spatial pattern of urban centres fit into a theoretical model and to what extent ? The spatial analysis of towns by the author is not only illuminating but his unique contribution is the adoption of the concept of Growth foci in determining the different levels of growth foci in part of India an approach hitherto untouched in the field of Urban Geography.
This book would not only serve as a model for researchers but would arouse interest among geographers, anthropologists and scholars of settlements and development planners.
