Varying according to the scope of Hayek's contributions, the papers include an affirmation of the relevance' of Hayek's work for our time by George Roche; a survey of his contribution to knowledge by Fritz Machlup; Arthur Shenfield's appraisal of Hayek's innovative work on the methodology of the social sciences; and Max Hart well's analysis of the historians' dis tortion of the historical accounts of the events in capitalist societies. William Buckley takes Hayek's famous polemic The Road to Serfdom as a starting point for an explanation of the appeal of socialism to intellectuals; Gottfried Dietze surveys Hayek's analyses of the legal and political structure required for a free society; and Shirley Letwin discusses Hayek's achievements as a scholar and mentor.
A full bibliography of Hayek's work is appended to Fritz Machlup's essay, and excerpts from the citation accompanying his receipt of the Nobel Prize in Economic Science are included.
