Agro-climate and technology have been the major factors in agricultural development in India. This study attempts to analyse the growth rates in the light of new technology and the development of the agricultural sector over years. Commercial crops like sugarcane, plantation crops, tobacco, groundnut along with wheat and rice have made important contribution in productivity growth. Modern inputs like chemicals, mechanization, water and extension have initiated a process toward that end. But owing to limita tions in input supplies, different States have shown different performance levels.
It is a matter of concern that food grain production growth is only at the subsistence level and unless stringent action is taken to improve efficiency and productivity, long term prospects would be Very bleak. This study addresses to some of these issues, besides to the nature of land distribu tion and the related subjects. As such, this could be of help to planners, administrators and researchers to strengthen the eco-development approach to growth.
