National account statistics - New Delhi Department of Statistics 1989 - 374 p.
This publication describes the sources and methods of estimation of macro-economic aggregates, like domestic product, saving, capital formation, accounts of the public sector and consolidated accounts, of the nation, presented in central statistical Organisation (CSO)'s annual publication National Accounts Statistics (NAS). The publication is divided into five parts, and each part, where necessary, is further sub-divided into a number of chapters. Part-I deals with the Development of National Accounts and Concepts of National Accounts Aggregates. Parts-II to V provide details of estimation of domestic product, saving and capital formation, public sector transactions and consolidated accounts of the nation.
Each chapter in Parts II to V, by and large, follows a common pattern providing details of the coverage of the sector to which the chapter refers, concepts used and their meaning, methodology and source material for estimation of domestic product, consumption expenditure, saving, capital formation, etc., and quality and limitations of data base used in preparing the estimates. The discussion is confined to estimates of the macro-economic aggregates at gross level, such as gross domestic product and gross domestic saving. The discussion on the consumption of fixed capital needed for subtraction from each of the gross aggregates to derive the net aggregates, such as net domestic product and net domestic saving, forms part of a separate chapter 22 Capital Stock and Consumption of Fixed Capital. The official estimates of capital stock prepared, for the first time, as on 31st March 1981 following perpetual inventory method (PIM) were released by CSO in December, 1988. The estimates of consumption of fixed capital now used to derive the net aggregates are based on the estimates of capital stock so arrived.
