As part of the work programme of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the secretariat's Population Division has undertaken the preparation and publication of a series of country monographs on the population situation of each interested country in the region. Each mono graph is being prepared in close co-operation with country experts and with the financial support of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA). The present monograph on India is the tenth in the series. The first on Hong Kong, the second on the Republic of Korea, the third on Thailand, the fourth on Sri Lanka, the fifth on the Philippines, the sixth on Nepal, the eighth on Bangladesh and the ninth on Australia have already been published. Monographs are in preparation on Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and New Zealand. A series of reports for the island countries of the Pacific has also been undertaken in collaboration with the South Pacific Commission. These reports together constitute the seventh in the ESCAP country monograph series. The reports on American Samoa and on Papua New Guinea have already been published. Work is in progress on similar studies for Cook Islands, Fiji and Solomon Islands. Monographs for other countries of the ESCAP region will be prepared as the resources of the secretariat permit.
